Specialist Medical Negligence & Personal Injury Claims
What we do
SBL Solicitors is a specialist medical negligence and serious personal injury firm, with particular expertise in obstetric, gynaecological and dental negligence claims.
Many of the cases we are asked to assess involve clients who have been left with unanswered questions following medical treatment or injury, and who are seeking clarity as to what has happened and what their options may be.
Led by Sharn Birk — Director & Principal
The firm is led by Sharn Birk, Director and Principal, who qualified as a solicitor in 2007 and has developed a specialist practice in medical negligence and serious personal injury claims. Sharn brings over 20 years’ legal experience to her practice.
Her practice has developed with a strong and consistent focus on:
stillbirth and neonatal death claims
obstetric and maternity care failures
gynaecological negligence and fertility-related injury
dental negligence, including cosmetic treatment, implant failure and nerve injury
serious personal injury claims
These are not occasional areas of work. They form a core part of her day-to-day practice.

Experience built on careful assessment
Experience in this field is not simply about years of practice. It involves:
identifying when medical care may not align with expected standards
recognising patterns within medical records and treatment pathways
understanding when expert evidence is likely to support a claim
assessing whether any failing has had a material impact on the outcome
Many of the cases we are asked to review involve complex issues of causation, particularly where the question is whether earlier intervention or different treatment would have changed the outcome. These are matters that require careful judgment developed over time.
A specialist focus on sensitive and complex cases
A significant part of the firm's work involves cases which are both complex and sensitive in nature. This includes:
stillbirth and neonatal death claims
complications arising during pregnancy and labour
ectopic pregnancy and emergency care
fertility-related issues
surgical complications affecting surrounding organs
These cases require not only detailed legal and medical analysis, but also a measured and respectful approach to the circumstances involved.
A personal touch
Clients often come to us at difficult points in their lives. As a mother of two, Sharn understands that many cases (particularly those involving pregnancy, childbirth, or long-term health impact) carry a personal and emotional dimension. Clients are treated as individuals, not case numbers.

Our approach is to provide:
Clear and straightforward legal advice
Consistency and continuity throughout the case
A measured and supportive approach to communication
Helping you get the answers and compensation you deserve
How we work
We aim to ensure that clients understand their position at each stage and are able to make informed decisions about how to proceed.
All claims are handled by Sharn Birk personally, with occasional assistance from other staff members or fee earners. This ensures that clients benefit from consistent, experienced oversight at every stage, and are able to make informed decisions about how to proceed.
This approach ensures that every case benefits from consistent, experienced oversight from start to conclusion.
How we handle our cases
A balanced and honest approach
Not every case will proceed. Part of acting in a client's best interests is being clear about that at an early stage.
Where the evidence does not support a claim, you will be advised of that. Where a claim can be pursued, it will be handled carefully, with a clear focus on achieving an appropriate outcome.

If you have concerns about medical treatment or an injury you have sustained, you are welcome to contact us for an initial discussion. You do not need to have everything worked out before getting in touch. We will listen to your situation, understand what has happened, and advise whether further investigation may be appropriate.
